The power of partnerships.
RENEW operates under an innovative public-private partnership that allows us to do smaller investments than traditional private equity investors on the continent of Africa. This model helps bridge the financing gap and addresses the economic "missing middle" that stalls economic growth in most frontier markets. Under this type of partnership, the development community covers some of RENEW's operating expenses so we can provide members of the IAN high-quality investment management services without charging exorbitant fees relative to the size of the investments being considered. Starting in 2013, RENEW began testing this business model with the U.S. Government, which resulted in seven investments and more than 1,100 jobs supported by the IAN's portfolio. But, that was just the start - investments take years to develop and nurture. So, thanks to the Canadian Government through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), RENEW will be able to scale up our support for the IAN and continue providing high-quality investment services in Ethiopia for the next five years under the Accelerating Business Growth (ABG) program.
RENEW'S ABG program is undertaken with financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada. The ABG program is a public-private partnership that aims to support high potential, responsible small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Ethiopia, providing them with the tools, resources and training they need to attract and efficiently use finance to scale, thereby enabling them to play a stronger role in the Ethiopian economy. The goal of this partnership is to increase the awareness and understanding of private equity investing in Ethiopia, increase the number of investments being made in Ethiopian SMEs by addressing the current financing gap, help companies transform into market leaders and ultimately lead to sustainable job creation for low-skilled workers, including women and young adults.
In addition, RENEW works in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development through Mercy Corps' PRIME (Pastoralist Resilience Improvement through Market Expansion) program.
Development Organizations and Firms
RENEW’s consultants work with development organizations to design and implement public-private-partnership models that strengthen the private sector in developing countries. Our SME angel investment model creates an angel market in developing countries. Our team builds quality investment portfolios of SMEs, organizes investors in North America and Europe and hosts them in developing countries, brokers investments, designs specialized sidecar funds to co-invest with private investors, and provides pre- and post-investment technical assistance to help SMEs become market leaders. Through this model, the governments and other development organizations lower the high transaction costs that keep the private sector on the sidelines of development.
Our goal is to help development organizations attract and leverage private investors and multinational corporations to become active investors in developing countries.
The Impact Angel Network is a member of the Angel Capital Association (ACA), a North American trade association focused on serving accredited angel investors and angel networks. ACA provides professional development, public policy advocacy and significant benefits and resources to its membership of more than 12,000 individual accredited investors in 220 angel groups and platforms.
