Every day, we business men and women wake up and drive full speed ahead the minute our feet hit the floor. From 5 AM to 10 PM, it’s nonstop; that's the game of business. And just when we feel like we are getting ahead, it happens… a key member of our team quits and joins a competitor, a supplier loses our order, a customer is late in paying, the government decides to perform an audit, payroll is next week and there is not enough cash. The list of problems always outweighs the opportunities, but for some reason deep within us, we keep going. We love the thrill of business, and we know we can play the game better. But it’s hard to find time, it’s hard to get away from the craziness that begins the minute we get up to the moment we collapse in our beds. Where do executives go to get the work done that we know needs to be done to get us out of the chaos?
This is the purpose of The Exchange. Here, during our morning sessions, an elite group of business executives will learn the secrets to building their companies into market leaders. We’ll teach simple tools and work on developing systems that will move us away from fire-fighting into the leaders we all know we are inside.
The Exchange will be run very much like a premier sports team. You’ll be forced to practice. You’ll be coached. You’ll be pushed and encouraged to not only play hard, but to play smart. Slowly, as the lessons sink in, the problems, which really never go away, will not phase us as they did before because instead you’ll have a system in place for dealing with all of the issues that inevitably arise. You’ll have a management team that knows their roles, responsibilities, and objectives. You’ll have a clear business plan that you are executing against. You’ll know what your cash flow looks like three months out, what your sales targets vs. actuals are, what your competitors are doing and how you’ll stay three steps ahead of them. You’ll get control and become the executives that will lead your nations.

What is it?
Ethiopia has never experienced a business development program like The Executive's League. RENEW and our network of investors from around the world will train, coach, and encourage a group of elite business executives through a four-month business growth program. We’ll teach the secrets that can unlock growth in companies. In the past, this knowledge was given only to our portfolio companies on an ad-hoc basis. Starting in 2017, Ethiopia’s best will be hand-selected to join The Executive’s League. Space will be limited and spots are reserved for companies RENEW and the IAN has invested in. However, an additional 30 companies will be selected from around Ethiopia, over the next five years. There will be strict requirements to participate. Continue reading to learn more.
Growing a company is not easy. Just like a sports team with a history of winning, you can't show up on the field and expect results without a whole lot of practice and discipline. RENEW's program provides company leaders with the tools they need to set their companies on a winning course. The program covers concepts and skills you will use at all stages of your company’s growth.
Where and when is it?
The trainings will be held in the mornings and some afternoons at The Exchange. The first group will begin their training in March 2017. Over the next five years, RENEW will work with 20 of our portfolio companies and 30 others: the best companies in Ethiopia.
What will be covered?
Through a series of intense, two-hour courses, The Executive’s League will be a blend of lecture, open discussion and peer review that will answer some of the most challenging questions executives face, and then help them work through a process to find answers and build management disciplines within their companies. Below are examples of the topics that will be covered:
Preparing for rapid growth:
- Maximizing the value of new shareholders – becoming an international corporation.
- Good governance and the secret to success – top down and bottom up.
- Understand your corporate agreements – the rules that govern your company.
- Preparing for rapid growth – tightening up your ship, charting the course.
- Building a great budget – the ultimate planning tool.
- Managing cash: The famous 13-week Cash Flow Forecast.
The 120-days growth program:
- Being a great leader and CEO.
- The Board meeting.
- The Management meeting.
- Recruiting and building a rock star management team.
- Executing your plan and getting results.
- A week in the life of a great CEO and management team.
- Understanding your financial statements and tracking your performance.
- Mastering the art of selling and building a great brand.
The mix of early morning/evening seminars will aim to limit disruption to your business activities, all while forcing you to take the steps necessary to grow your business.
Are you eligible?
The program is reserved for companies of the Impact Angel Network's portfolio. RENEW will also accept 30 companies over the next five years (average six per year) to participate in the program alongside our portfolio. Here’s how to apply:
