According to a recent article in The New York Times entitled Will 'Social Capital’ be the Next Big Industry to Emerge? the concept of microfinance made alternatives to philanthropy popular. Now other industries and segments of the financial world are following suit.

Within for-profit and non-profit entities alike, “the key was simply adding old-fashioned capitalism and a business model to charity,” claims the article. Now the world over, you can find entrepreneurs dedicated to both financial viability and social impact. Markets for organic food and fair trade have been producing results for a decade. According to the article, “their sucesses foreshadow a permanent place for social investment.”
